The whistling canada goose tree duck

If you spend much time near a South Texas river or lake, you have probably noticed one or more ducks rapidly flying overhead while whistling a tune. These are black bellied whistling ducks. They are also known as tree ducks, for that’s where they like to perch and even spend the night.

Black bellied whistling ducks are easily identified by their distinctive colors. As their name suggests, their underside is black. canada goose

Their beak and legs are orange or almost pink. Their wings are decorated with a broad white band that’s obvious when they are perched or in flight.

According to Ducks Unlimited, black bellied whistling ducks are long necked and the most erect of all ducks. These characteristics are more similar to those of a goose than a duck.

Black bellied whistling ducks whistle loudly as they fly. This often permits them to be identified long before they are close enough for their plumage to be seen clearly.

Black bellied whistling ducks have returned to Texas from Mexico and Central America to begin new families and to serenade bird watchers. On most evenings at our place, small flocks of whistling ducks fly just over the treetops as they look for a place to roost.

During summer you might be able to see them near bodies of water throughout South Central Texas. I’ve seen many along the Guadalupe River. The one in the photograph spent the night on our place perched in a drought killed cedar elm around 900 feet from the Geronimo Creek.

Whistling ducks mate for life. They nest in tree cavities or on the ground sheltered under cactus or brush. Ducks Unlimited notes that females sometimes share the same nest. Since one female can lay up to 19 eggs, a full nest is a major find for a predator.

Ducks Unlimited supports its habitat conservation with serious scientific studies. Besides protecting ducks, geese and other waterfowl, the conserved habitat is home to numerous species of plants, fish, shellfish and other organisms.
